Educational Internet Activities during break

If you and your kids need some educational activities to do using the Internet during break, then have your students look at some of the web sites below. Most of them they have used, but a couple may be new. Thanks.

5th Grade Countries-Excel

The 5th grade students are almost finished with the first part of their, "Where Should I Go This Summer," project. They are getting ready to finish their Microsoft Excel documents detailing their travel plan itinerary of airfare costs, hotel costs, food costs, activities costs, and costs for extra expenses. The information they find is documented on their Excel and then they use formulas to add all of the expenses and then they use a pie chart to explain the expenses. They are graded out of 20 points for this part of their project and they will be sent home a skill/checklist assessment sheet with how well they did.

Here is where their finished projects will be located sometime shortly after Thanksgiving Break.

4th grade Welcome to the Web

The 4th grade students have been busy learning about the web/Internet with an online activity titled Welcome to the Web. They have completed 4 out of 7 sections so far and will be completing the other 3 sections shortly before Winter Break. So far they have learned about Getting Started Online, Staying Safe, and Using Your Browser. Some information they should be able to bring home and use are: what are hyperlinks and what do they do, what does the Back Button do, what are web browsers and name a few, where is the address bar, and how do you add a bookmark/favorite on your web browser.

In the coming month they will be learning about different punctation marks to use to search more easily within a search engine, how to print from the Internet, how to use the Find tool, and completing a challenge to put all of their information to use in a game like setting.

Please help the students out with this information at home also, as it is more imperative for them to be using this information and these skills at home with you.

3rd Grade Keyboarding

The 3rd grade students are busy keyboarding and typing in the computer lab. I try to provide different games to start the class for the first 10-15 minutes to keep them interested in typing and using the correct fingers on the keyboard. So far the students have mastered all 8 keys on the Home Row and the return, delete and space bar keys. They also have mastered some "reach" keys, which are the e, r, h, and o keys.

They all have completed 1 Words Per Minute (WPM) typing test and will be completing another WPM typing test before Winter Break. The students are reminded of 3 goals they need to accomplish before the end of the school year in regards to keyboarding and typing.
1) Type equal to or as many words as they can write by hand
2) Type at least 5 wpm
3) Type for accuracy

They are more than welcome to practice typing the lessons or practice typing using online typing games at home. This is not required but even doing it 1 time a week for 10 minutes is better than nothing at all. Both are located at: http://www.waukee.k12.ia.us/easonelementary/computers/third_grade_keyboarding.html

Kindergarten Integration

The Kindergarten grade students have been doing a variety of activities in the computer lab in relationship to Patterns and Reading/Writing/Daily 5 activities on the Internet. The specifically used KidPix to create 2-3 different Stamp Patterns from their knowledge of Patterns in their classroom. They then printed these off to be included in their portfolio or to take home.
I talk to the Kindergarten students about being able to do these activities anywhere they can get to the Internet, such as at home, at the library, at a friend's house, etc. They are reminded that they might need to ask an adult to help get them to the Eason Elementary web site, but from there, the students should be able to navigate to the web sites they have explored in the computer lab. Here are a couple:

1st Grade Integration

The 1st grade students have been coming into the computer lab at least 1 time a cycle and most recently have finished and printed their flower/plant picture using KidPix. KidPix is a software application installed on all of the elementary computers within the school district. The 1st graders used KidPix to draw and label their flower/plant in relationship to what they learned about flowers/plants with their teacher in the classroom, included their name, printed out their completed project and have displayed it in their portfolio. The 1st graders did a wonderful job and shown below are a few examples.

Recycling

Parents, please send your new or used Printer Inkjet Cartridges, Printer Laser Cartridges and used Cell Phones from home or work with your students in a plastic Ziploc bag to school as often as you can. Our school can send these cartridges in monthly to be recycled and will receive a paycheck for our school for the used items. It is FREE for the school and for you and Mr. Morton will take care of sending the items to be recycled, which is also free of charge. Thanks.
