Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd Grade Integration-Winter Break Activities

It has been awhile since I have posted about the Kindergarten, First and Second grade students coming into the computer lab to integrate technology into their curriculum.

These students have been exploring a variety of web sites to better integrate what they learn in their classrooms into the computer lab.  Mostly all of these web sites that students can explore on the Internet at home, at their public library or any place where the Internet is available.  I usually tell the students to ask an adult to help them get to the Eason Elementary web site and for the most part the students should know how to get to the web sites we have explored.  Here are a few web sites that each respective Kindergarten, First and Second grade classes have explored lately.  Please take a look over Winter Break.

3rd Grade Microsoft Word

The 3rd grade students have extensively used Microsoft Word as a typing program to practice their typing. I have now started to showcase some Microsoft Word toolbars and skills that the students can used within their school and home setting to better use and understand Microsoft Word.  This would include for example: making text bold, highlighting text, copying and pasting text, and centering text to name a few.  So far the students have learned how to select one word (double-click), how to select a paragraph (triple-click), and how to select a sentence (Cmd in Mac, Ctrl in Windows and click).

They will soon be learning how to Bold, Italicize and Underline words.  Please practice these tools and skills with your students at home or have them showcase these tools and skills to you if you are unsure how to use them.

5th Grade Countries-Country Research

The fifth graders are on their second part of their Project-Based Learning project, Where Should I Go This Summer?  They are now working on their country research using provided web sites located on their wiki. Each partner is looking up 7 facts on the wiki pertained to their country and then transferring that information onto their country facts research sheet which is located in Microsoft Word.

The students are heavily focusing on copying and pasting their information and urls from their internet resources into their Microsoft Word document.  The purpose of this is to cut back on the time needed to type in everything little thing and to learn a new quick tip that they can further use at home.

Please have your student(s) show you how to COPY (Edit in the Menu Bar >Copy) and PASTE (Edit in the Menu Bar >Paste) different items at home.  This is good practice for them.

5th Grade Countries-Excel

The 5th grade students have completed their Microsoft Excel Travel Plans based on their country with their partner. Please take a look.
During their experiences of working with Microsoft Excel they learned how to copy and paste information and web sites from the Internet into Excel, how to use different tools within Excel, how to create formulas to easily add totals together, and how to make a pie chart.

The students should be bringing home a blue colored assessment sheet for their Microsoft Excel work. Please take a look at their progress. Thanks, Brandon.

The students are now researching about their country and next will individually be creating a poster using Microsoft Word.

4th grade Welcome to the Web

The fourth grade students have been learning how to search information more easily on the Internet within Google, Bing or whatever search engine.

They are being taught to use Speech Marks around word phrases to search that particular phrase: "Chocolate Cake" instead of Chocolate Cake.

They are being taught to use the + sign before words with MUST appear in their search results: red +mustang instead of red mustang (shows everything related to mustang, but if not red that is okay).

They are being taught to use the -sign before words which MUST NOT appear in their search results: red -mustang instead of red mustang (shows every red car, except a mustang.

Practice these at home with your student(s) to reinforce their learning from the computer lab.

5th Grade Countries-Research

The 5th grade students are currently starting the second part of their project, researching about their country. Each partner has to look up 7 facts using web sites provided by Mr. Morton. The students have to make sure they copy down the URL (web site), as we heavily talked about copyright in 5th grade. The students are learning how to copy and paste their information into their Microsoft Word Research document from the information they find on the provided web sites.

Here is the research they are looking up.

Computer Whiz Winners-November

Every month Mr. Morton announces a "Computer Whiz" winner to a student in each 3rd, 4th and 5th grade class that is going above and beyond to showcase First Class Eason Behaviors in the computer lab, and throughout the school day, each and every day.
